4 mLs of sputum

This week made me feel somewhat old. First of all, there were 2nd years having their one week block at Repat. Then there was WORK EXPERIENCE year-10 girl, but I swear she was 25 - sheesh! It made me think about how far I've come in two years - I still remember looking in awe of these fourth years and not knowing if I could do it myself. It was kinda nice to just strut around the ward knowing what I was doing whilst the 2nd years stared at me - mwahahaha. Plus the Asian 2nd year was asking me questions heehee. It also got me thinking, where were you in year 10 and what did you do for work experience? My answer: I was at MAYNE Pathology (now defunct) = WORST! Making labels and umm that's about it. I don't think I was thinking physio at that time at all...I didn't think 6 years down the track I'd be a nearly qualified PT - how quickly it changes! Year 10 was the time of MRS. WONG and all things accelerated maths. It was also the time of being ditched and trying to fit in a group of friends I did not fit with. MEH. Thank goodness for accelerated maths :) So, what are your work experience/yr 10 stories? :p

A letter that makes your day

3 mLs of sputum

Got passed on a little letter today by my supervisor, Paul.

"A special thank-you to her personal attendant SU-WEN NG"

I'm chuffed :) Things like that just make your day. More and more I think this is the right path I have chosen. I don't mind waking up early and going to work to exercise old men and ladies - oh trust me, it's more than that :p Only 6 days left of Gerontology - darn I'll actually miss it!

Broome

1 mLs of sputum

Been a bit obsessed with Broome for a few days now. I think it might be a good place to get away for a short bit in August when I have my six-week break - ride some scooters, camels on the beach, be a bogan and such.

Though the flight costs basically same as Vanuatu, and accommodation around $50 or so a night? Anyway now I don't think that's as much of an excuse 'cos (hopefully) next year I'm working...

And tonight is TIME. Australia vs Ghana 11.30pm - COME ON!!

Fifty questions out of boredom

1. How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?
Twenty?

2. Which is worse, failing or never trying?
Never trying.

3. If life is so short, why do we do so many things we don’t like and like so many things we don’t do?
People are scared, afraid to admit and take chances.

4. When it’s all said and done, will you have said more than you’ve done?
Done more than said.

5. What is the one thing you’d most like to change about the world?
Poverty and education for all.

6. If happiness was the national currency, what kind of work would make you rich?
Travel expert!

7. Are you doing what you believe in, or are you settling for what you are doing?
Good question. At the moment, I'm settling for what I'm doing, but I am believing in it more every day, and every year :)

8. If the average human life span was 40 years, how would you live your life differently?
Well that would mean I'm more than half way through. I'd finish my course this year, work for a few years, then TRAVEL/work overseas. I'd skydive, paraglide before I'm done. In a way, not all that different from normal lifespan...

9. To what degree have you actually controlled the course your life has taken?
A fair chunk.

10. Are you more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things?
Doing the right things.

11. You’re having lunch with three people you respect and admire. They all start criticizing a close friend of yours, not knowing she is your friend. The criticism is distasteful and unjustified. What do you do?
Try to change topic?

Be a good child for mummy and daddy.

13. Would you break the law to save a loved one?
Yeah

Probably

15. What’s something you know you do differently than most people?
I don't cram :p I stick to the speed limit most of the time.

16. How come the things that make you happy don’t make everyone happy?
'Cos I can be a tad weird and take things fairly lightly.

17. What's one thing have you not done that you really want to do? What’s holding you back?
Travel to Europe - money, time, who to go with? :p also skydiving - too scared and risky at a young age xD

18. Are you holding onto something you need to let go of?
Perhaps

19. If you had to move to a state or country besides the one you currently live in, where would you move and why?
London - fairly liveable?

20. Do you push the elevator button more than once? Do you really believe it makes the elevator faster?
Yes sometimes I do, but no it doesn't make the elevator go any faster :( It is all in the mind...

21. Would you rather be a worried genius or a joyful simpleton?
That's simple. JOYFUL SIMPLETON.

22. Why are you, you?
Because I am comfortable with who I am and what I want to be/come. I have great friends and a loving family that keep me, me.

Hope so

The latter.

25. What are you most grateful for?
Family and friends.

26. Would you rather lose all of your old memories, or never be able to make new ones?
Hmm that's harsh. I can't chooose - pick lose all old memories (though this would devastate me) because at least you can make new ones and start afresh.

27. Is is possible to know the truth without challenging it first?
Think so. This is very deeep.

28. Has your greatest fear ever come true?

5 years ago = 2005 = BESTEST YEAR EVER. End of story.

30. What is your happiest childhood memory? What makes it so special?
Hmmm have to think a bit. Maybe floating in a floatie at Sunway Lagoon. Special 'cos it was fun and I was carefree with nothing to worry about!

31. At what time in your recent past have you felt most passionate and alive?
Holidaying in the South Pacific.

32. If not now, then when?
Working as a physiotherapist.

33. If you haven’t achieved it yet, what do you have to lose?
My face.

34. Have you ever been with someone, said nothing, and walked away feeling like you just had the best conversation ever?
Not really...

35. Why do religions that support love cause so many wars?
They don't?

42. Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by 10 years to become extremely attractive or famous?
Hell NO

43. What is the difference between being alive and truly living?
Everyone in this world is alive. But not everyone is living. Alive is merely being present. To live is to actually do something worthwhile, with a purpose.

44. When is it time to stop calculating risk and rewards, and just go ahead and do what you know is right?
When you've spent ages tossing up risks and rewards, you realise it's not worth wasting the time anymore, so just do it?

45. If we learn from our mistakes, why are we always so afraid to make a mistake?
People are afraid 'cos of how they will be perceived if they are wrong.

46. What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?
Can't think of anything..

47. When was the last time you noticed the sound of your own breathing?
After running for the bus or something...

48. What do you love? Have any of your recent actions openly expressed this love?
Family & friends. Dated my mum at Lindt cafe. Paid for dinner for friends?

49. In 5 years from now, will you remember what you did yesterday? What about the day before that? Or the day before that?
Ahh...apart from Socceroos losing 0-4, nope 'cos been boring weekend doing assignments!!

50. Decisions are being made right now. The question is: Are you making them for yourself, or are you letting others make them for you?
Making them for myself. Hopefully the right ones too.

Thirteen weeks in a row

It's been thirteen weeks on the trot so far within the walls of Austin Health. Can't believe it! It's been a pretty tough slog so far so being away from the main campus with a 51-year-old, 6-foot plus man as supervisor for the next month is pretty sweet. Gerontology is treating me well so far :) I like/love 80/90+ year old men/women doing squats and calf raises in the gym (Y) They are such troopers. Plus there's Sampson, the lone fish in the fish tank.

On a more serious note, was privileged enough to attend Sarah Wong's graduation on Tues. I found the speeches near the end pretty motivating and inspiring :p All I could think was ALLIED HEALTH REPRESENT and what other industry would you rather put your heart and soul into? Making a difference to people's lives - what more could you want?

Rest assured - your future is in good hands with these two people as above.

Biased.

This foggy morning headed to Berkeley St to do even MORE group systematic review. Ended up getting a bit stuck on biases of specific studies. Stumbled across this. Pretty funny I reckon. Just selected a few :)
Bandwagon effect – the tendency to do (or believe) things because many other people do (or believe) the same. Related to groupthink and herd behavior.
Outcome bias – the tendency to judge a decision by its eventual outcome instead of based on the quality of the decision at the time it was made.
Von Restorff effect – the tendency for an item that "stands out like a sore thumb" to be more likely to be remembered than other items
Hindsight bias – sometimes called the "I-knew-it-all-along" effect, the tendency to see past events as being predictable.
Optimism bias – the tendency to be over-optimistic about the outcome of planned actions.
Ostrich effect – ignoring an obvious (negative) situation
Halo effect – the tendency for a person's positive or negative traits to "spill over" from one area of their personality to another in others' perceptions of them
Self-serving bias – the tendency to claim more responsibility for successes than failures. It may also manifest itself as a tendency for people to evaluate ambiguous information in a way beneficial to their interests

Never knew there were so many "biases"...
