1 mLs of sputum

The last two Fridays has been AWESOME FUN - only because they've been seminars covering the topic of Women's Health :D This morning was pretty funny - I dunno if I'm just immature, but I look around me and everyone really is on the verge of sniggering and half-smiling at the ridicularity of it all. I mean ok it's like 8a.m in the morning and BAM what/where/how is this view? There's the baby's head and there's a bum crack...

So we went through the stages of normal labour - remember the 3 P's girls - i) Powers ii) Passage iii) Passenger. So the "Powers" refers to the mother's pushing power and uterine contractions, then passage refers to the bony pelvis and soft tissues whilst passenger refers to the baby itself - if you have a fat baby head, it is harder to get out. Reasonable logic. What I really enjoyed was this, quote the lecturer: "Men like problems with solutions. So they're like ok we got a problem here, we need to get the baby out *rubs hands together* now how are we going to do this? And realising they need to wait 12 hours for the result, men get frustrated and annoyed because they just want it out already!" This was met with raucous laughter considering like 85% of the year level is indeed female.

Then came some practicals. First one was good in that we did more pelvic tilting and pelvic floor muscle training. Second we did TENS. Final one we had an ACTIVE BIRTHING CLASS. So yes we were required to pretend that we were in our final stages of labour and having massive contractions - we squatted, rubbed our quads and listened to Geri Halliwell's "It's Raining Men" for 60s because that replicated one bout of uncomfortable contraction. We tried some visualisation techniques and distraction i.e. sitting on the fit ball stomping our legs and squeezing stress balls shouting "Baby out" and "Aaaagghh."

So yes, I even managed to catch some of the action.

I love uni :)

I think I've learnt now how important it is to have things to look forward to on the weekends. When you get so caught up in stuff throughout the week and feel just a little overwhelmed, you have to know there are better days ahead, so I think more than ever having dinner dates, birthday celebrations, sharing laughter and happiness is the way to go. Let's you realise there is more to life than the Mon-Fri ho-hum.

Friday night was great. Osler is now twenty one :D Woohooo - just want to say thanks for being such a great buddy. You are definitely my best guy friend (Y) :p I miss those 903 bus conversations heeeheee.
Bit of teasing through the night, but all in good fun - sif I wouldn't realise what was going on mwahaha

Sat night at my cousin's apartment terrace was pretty awesome. Wish I could cook like that :P It was French-themed so I wore a beret LOL

LOVE polaroids!

Dad's back

So my dad is back :) It was nice to come home and then someone was actually around (though Dad was sleeping ._____________. ) It marks one more week till Mum's back and to be honest, REALLY want her back :p I dunno..just miss seeing her round the house :)

The last two mornings I've spent in ICU. Though really it's just been mainly observing - did more in ICU last year than I have this year which is rather strange. That blonde chick of a supervisor is nice :) How is she so smart? :P Then the last two afternoons had SIMULATED patients so basically they are actresses/actors of differing ages who get changed into gowns and jump into bed with a Hudson Mask on blasting 6L/min away and coughing phlegm everywhere - 'cept there is no actual phlegm. Just imaginary. And on auscultation, obviously it is a normal chest but the supervisor shouts out they've actually got bronchial BS or something...funny! But the really good thing about it is the "patient" actually giving you feedback - something you don't get in real life. So they can tell you how the communication and rapport was etc etc. Then at the end we all have this good discussion between the four of us and supervisor. So I think the learning there is alright but of course, nothing can replace the real thing. Just SO hard and annoying to do assessments and treatments in pairs or fours seriously! That's not realistic...what was hilarious to see was after finishing up with the "patient" they just got up or like we were talking to them naturally and they got changed etc to their normal clothes - so bizarre to see that...then it's like well see you tomorrow!

Apparently they do it to LaTrobe kids too and one of them talked about it as if it were a full-time job and that in the morning I was such-and-such a patient and now I'm getting confused because now I'm pre-op not post-op etc HA! I wonder how much they get paid?

The Border

1 mLs of sputum

So over the three days I spent on the NSW-VIC border it was a pretty fun time, though I must admit after 3 days and 2 nights, I had had just about enough of driving and other stuff. The drive TO Echuca/Moama was actually pretty breezy and we got there in no time but the return journey? An eternity. Didn't help we got lost on GRAVEL road for like an hour dodging potholes and puddles of muddy water and bumpity bump along the way 'cos of the uneveness. SIGH. Was just about losing it and half hysterically laughing at what was transpiring till there was a KIND SOUL driving in a 4WD that I pretty pleased someone to have the courage to ask. LUCKILY led us the way out, if not we were heading in the absolute opposite direction. Once we were on course it was all good :)

I enjoyed the canoeing - though we were doing donuts in it really and treading water for a good 10 minutes or so - the TABOO/CHARADES, the Murray River lunch cruise, the sightseeing, the McDonalds, the camwhoring, but not so the Monopoly (where I was a no-hoper and bankrupted), the large crack on the window screen that I hope my parents will not kill me for, the dirtied car and the after-the-shower-into-the-bedroom-scene. It's a bit sad it's taken like 4 years for us unis to go on a roadtrip as such but come to think of it, we've only recently been close. First year had no real idea whose these people were so how things change...

Now for some photos :D
Finally all got off the ground...

Crazy driver crossing NSW border

Enjoying some lunchies on the boat

'Cos I scrub decks..

Cos this is the only man in my life

'Cos I shoot guns

And play FRISBEE

And have solo photos with a DAM

And have this face when I cook

Am the crazy-faced one

Lost in the middle of nowhere

Ok that pretty much sums it/me up :)

I'm a FREE child now - Daddy Ng left the country last night so it was just me and bro sitting in the car on the drive back home. Then today went grocery shopping, as brothers and sisters do, though EASTER SUNDAY = hardly any shops opened so we went to the Chinese and Korean shops, where he conveniently picked up Korean magazines along the way. So actually on second thoughts, maybe that is the only reason why he tagged along hmmm...I cooked udon with dumplings and TOO MUCH so I think we may have a bit for dinner too :P I have then tended to the needs of Miffy Ng aka cleaning up all her crap whilst she sits on the grass snoozing :) Tomorrow off to Echuca/Moama which should be good! Needless to say I will be sick of driving by the time I'm back. Hoping for good weather too!

Am admittedly missing Mummy and Daddy Ng and sometimes feeling lonely...

Well first clinic block is OVER. The last week and half was probably the toughest I have had to endure in terms of personally overcoming things. Ended with a few tears yesterday and letters to the university and the centre. Nevermind. I really did enjoy my month at rehab. It's just always good to be around people who are motivated and want to improve. Then to see them actually improve day-by-day is great and you feel like you can really make an impact on these people. Final feedback was fairly positive - they said I do suit a rehab setting and that they may see me in the future =o There were some things that I'll definitely take heart in and implement in the next block!

Always love it when I can share these experiences and feelings with the absolute pro RN Div. 1 (grad) found at 2N at Big Fish, Small Fish, Cardboard BOX Hill. Thank you :) PT4 (NG). Only you can understand :P

Camwhore :p
Writing initial notes (Y)
Ahem.

So now I CANNOT wait to have a well-deserved sleep-in I reckon. I am going to be a Mum tomorrow - lots of washing and cleaning etc (and being a bum).
